Garry Oak Meadows in the PKOLS – Mount Douglas was important to humans and biodiversity for millennia. First Nation People shaped and maintained these ecosystems for thousands of years. PKOLS Mount Douglas has a significant Garry Oak area, located mainly in the open upper area of the Mount.
These native meadows were once a significant feature in the Salish Sea Basin, primarily found in southeastern Vancouver Island, Puget Sound, the Gulf Islands and the Lowlands of Oregon. They are rapidly disappearing in all these areas, and PKOLS – Mount Douglas is one of the few areas where they are protected.
